Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 : Infinity Ward finally regains its best level

Max Level Gaming score
8.5/10After several irregular episodes, Call of Duty Needed a real comeback. Modern Warfare 4 arrives with a fairly clear mission: to conclude the arc launched in 2019, propose a campaign worthy of the name Modern Warfare and put DMZ at the center of the experience. On these three points, Infinity Ward strikes quite right. The result is not revolutionary, but it is spectacular, solid and above all much more coherent than several recent episodes.
Gameplay
9/10Manette in hand, Modern Warfare 4 quickly recalls why Infinity Ward remains a reference in the field of FPS.
The weapons have weight, the impacts are precise and the clashes have this immediate sensation typical of the series. The movements remain fluid without falling into the excess of acrobatias of some previous episodes.
The campaign effectively alternates close fighting, great offensives, infiltration and more open sequences.
The Stranded mission is particularly successful. It leaves more freedom, allows to explore, recover equipment and offers almost a mini- DMZ experience integrated into the campaign.
The multiplayer returns to a more direct and readable formula, with twelve 6v6 cards at launch and several additional modes.
Finally, DMZ becomes a real pillar of the game. Exploration, extraction, progression, equipment and clashes between players give the mode a real depth.
Graphics & art direction
9/10Modern Warfare 4 is impressive.
The environments are extremely detailed, the animations very clean and some passages of the campaign offer a level of spectacle rarely reached in a military FPS.
In particular, Korea is a very visual setting, with ravaged cities, huge military zones and particularly intense war scenes.
Paris, New York and Mumbai also make it possible to vary widely the environments.
Infinity Ward is not really looking for artistic originality. The studio focuses on cinematographic realism, and in this area the result remains among the best that is being done today.
Sound design & music
9/10The sound design is excellent.
Each weapon has a strong sound identity, explosions have a huge impact and environments give a real sense of depth.
Large-scale clashes work particularly well thanks to this very dense sound layer: distant fire, vehicles, radio communications and explosions create a feeling of chaos perfectly controlled.
The music remains more discreet but effectively accompanies the great moments of the campaign.
The whole is a huge part of immersion.
Story & interest
8/10The campaign lasts about six hours, but it almost never loses time.
Modern Warfare 4 tells two parallel stories: that of a group of young South Korean soldiers plunged into a large-scale invasion, and that of Captain Price, now out of the system and launched in a much more personal war.
The first part is clearly the most convincing.
Korean soldiers bring a more human dimension to history, with characters less invincible and more overwhelmed by what happens to them.
Price obviously remains central, but its bow sometimes seems more mechanical and less interesting.
The scenario remains of the pure military blockbuster, with all the usual exaggerations of Call of Duty, but several sequences actually work well emotionally.
The conclusion of the Modern Warfare Arch is satisfactory, although some characters would have deserved more development.
Content & polish
9/10Modern Warfare 4 is generous.
The campaign offers sixteen missions, the multiplayer arrives with twelve 6v6 cards, several large-scale modes and a complete progression.
DMZ then adds an entire layer to the game with its large area of Hajin, its missions, its extraction system, its progression and its base to develop.
It is probably one of the Call of Duty the most comprehensive proposals for launch in a long time.
The set is also very technically sound on the versions tested by the press.
The only real question mark is still about balancing the multiplayer once the servers are fully filled and the meta is installed.
VERDICT MAX LEVEL GAMING
8.5/10Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Don't reinvent the franchise.
He does something more important: he finally puts his fundamentals back to the right level.
The campaign is spectacular, DMZ returns much more ambitious and the multiplayer seems to find a more readable and direct formula.
Not everything is perfect. Some parts of the script work better than others, and you will still have to see how the multiplayer will evolve in the coming weeks.
But at the launch, Modern Warfare 4 above all gives the impression of a Call of Duty Who finally knows exactly what he wants to be.
