Gears of War: E-Day

Gears of War: E-Day : the brutal return that the saga expected

PCPlayStation 5Xbox Series

By the Max Level Gaming team

Max Level Gaming score

8.5/10

Twenty years after the beginning of Gears of War, The Coalition goes back in time to tell the story of Sera. E-Day finds Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locustes first appear on the surface. A return to the origins that completely assumes the DNA of the series while modernizing its formula enough to avoid simple nostalgic exercise.

Gameplay

9/10

Gears remains Gears: coverage, active reloading, heavy weapons and particularly violent clashes.

But E-Day brings much more mobility to fighting.

The movements are more fluid, the arenas offer more verticality and the environments react much more to confrontations.

The weapons always have this characteristic weight of the series and each encounter gives a real feeling of impact.

A few enemies nevertheless cash too much damage and some bosses slightly break the pace.

Graphics & art direction

9.5/10

E-Day is a real technical showcase.

Kalona gradually disintegrates in front of the player, with collapsing buildings, vehicles destroyed and entire quarters transformed by the invasion.

Characters, lights and destruction effects reach an impressive level.

But success comes mainly from the atmosphere: E-Day finds the dark, dirty and almost horrific side of the first Gears.

Sound design & music

9/10

Weapons slam with a power rarely equalled.

Every explosion, every shotgun and every encounter with the Locusts has a lot of impact.

The musical compositions effectively accompany the huge sequences of action but also know how to withdraw during the more tense passages.

Sound work is an important part of the feeling of permanent chaos.

Story & interest

8/10

Finding Marcus and Dom is obviously one of the main interests of E-Day.

The game shows their relationship before the events of the original trilogy while finally giving a direct representation of the Emergence Day.

Some scenes work very well, even if the script does not always develop its characters as well as its starting point could give it hope.

The action regularly takes precedence over emotion.

Content & polish

8.5/10

The campaign is particularly generous and offers many more open areas, optional elements and a true variety in the clashes.

The multiplayer and the various cooperative activities considerably enhance the lifespan.

However, the campaign would have gained a slight tightening: its environment experienced some declines in pace and some confrontations were repeated.

VERDICT MAX LEVEL GAMING

8.5/10

Gears of War: E-Day succeeds in returning to the sources.

It retains the brutality, weapons and coverage system that have made the licence reputation while offering more mobile confrontations and a very high level of achievement.

Not everything is perfect, especially in the rhythm of its long campaign, but The Coalition proves that Gears still has much to fight for.
