Nintendo Switch Sports Resort : the return to Wuhu Island flies

Nintendo Switch 2

Max Level Gaming score

8.5/10

Twenty years after Wii Sports, Nintendo continues to exploit a formula whose simplicity remains staggeringly effective. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort brings players to Wuhu Island with twelve activities, movement controls adapted to Joy-Con 2 and, above all, much more solo content than in Nintendo Switch Sports. It's not a revolution. Some disciplines even feel strongly already seen. But this time, Nintendo finally offers a sufficiently complete set so that the experience works as well on an evening with friends as when playing alone.

Gameplay

9/10

Nintendo always knows how to make a game immediately understandable.

Tennis, bowling, golf, basketball, volleyball, boxing, archery or table tennis: few movements are usually enough to understand the basics, while mastery requires more precision.

The Joy-Con 2 make movements particularly natural and several sports gain in finesse compared to previous episodes.

The new disciplines also bring some good surprises. The thumb fight is absurd but works perfectly in a multiplayer context, while skateboarding intelligently exploits the new possibilities of the controller.

Not everything is at the same level. Some activities remain less precise and the Power Cruising may in particular divide.

But as soon as several people are in front of the screen, Wii Sports magic still works immediately.

Graphics & art direction

8/10

Wuhu Island is a great part of the charm of the game.

The return of this iconic island gives much more personality to the whole than the installations sometimes too impersonal Nintendo Switch Sports.

On Switch 2, the image is clean, colorful and very readable. The game obviously does not try to impress technically, but its aesthetics perfectly corresponds to the experience proposed.

Being able to travel the island by skateboard, plane or water also brings a welcome consistency. The resort finally looks like a real place rather than just a succession of sports menus.

Sportsmates are still there and Mii also make their return, with much more customization options to unlock.

Sound design & music

8/10

Nintendo remains faithful to a light and immediately identifiable atmosphere.

The menus, results and different disciplines are accompanied by joyful and discreet themes that fit perfectly with the holiday spirit of the game.

The sound design plays mainly on legibility. The contact of a ball, a bowling strike or a good shot at tennis immediately have the sound response necessary to understand if the gesture was successful.

This is obviously not a soundtrack that we will necessarily listen to outside of the game, but in its context, it perfectly fulfils its role.

Story & interest

8/10

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Of course, there is no real scenario.

On the other hand, his solo interest is far superior to that of his predecessor thanks to the Island Crown mode.

This mode allows you to progress through several disciplines, face increasingly difficult opponents and eventually challenge the island's champions.

It's not a narrative campaign, but it finally gives a concrete objective when you play alone.

Wuhu Island exploration and tourism activities also contribute to making the world more alive.

Nintendo understood that a modern sports compilation had to offer something other than a simple list of disciplines.

Content & polish

8.5/10

Twelve sports provide a very solid basis.

Tennis, bowling, archery, boxing, volleyball, table tennis, basketball, golf, inch wrestling, skateboarding, plane and Power Cruising make it possible to vary widely the sessions.

Added to this are Island Crown, online games, casual play, private lobbies, discovery activities on Wuhu Island and a much more generous personalization system.

The progression now makes it possible to earn points in several modes and more only by playing constantly online, which corrects one of the most frustrating flaws of Nintendo Switch Sports.

However, we would have liked more disciplines that were truly new. An important part of the catalogue is still based on classics already seen in previous episodes.

VERDICT MAX LEVEL GAMING

8.5/10

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is probably the most complete version of the formula from Wii Sports Resort.

Nintendo does not revolutionize anything, but finally brings together the good ideas: twelve activities, real solo content, Wuhu Island, local and online multiplayer, more customization and movement controls always as accessible.

Some sports remain less convincing and the pure novelties are not as numerous as one might have hoped.

But when four players start to pack around a bowling, tennis or boxing game, we immediately understand why this series still works 20 years after its debut.

Pros

  • Wuhu Island brings a lot of charm
  • 12 various activities
  • Excellent in local multiplayer
  • Real solo content with Island Crown
  • Effective movement controls
  • Personalisation significantly improved
  • Very accessible for the whole family

Cons

  • Few really new sports
  • Some disciplines remain less convincing
  • A few small heavinesses in the online game
  • Some commands may still lack precision
